The
2009 JCMA Winter Conference for Men & Women will
take place from Monday July 6 to Thursday July 9.
in the contemporary
Australian context – and in the relaxing environment
of a conference centre set in the Yarra Ranges 90 minutes
from Central Melbourne. A coach return trip may be booked
from Melbourne, looking after our environment and saving
you worry. The conference is planned for approximately 70
participants.
Meeting and learning from Jews, Christians and Muslims together,
leads participants towards a deeper understanding of Judaism,
Christianity and Islam in Australia …and new friendships
just come naturally. JCMA will again hold this year’s
Annual Conference at the Pallotti Conference Centre, Warburton,
Victoria. This is a four day, live-in conference in the
relaxing environment of a conference centre set in the beautiful
Yarra Ranges, close to Warburton. There will be a creche
during daytime for young children.
We'll be tackling topics like:
- What is a secular society, and do religious people thrive best in such societies?
- What does it mean for you, as a person of faith, to live, work and contribute to society in Australia today - a society and community that can be indifferent or even hostile to faith?
- What tension points arise: marriage, workplace, values, ...?
- What benefits come from being part of a secular society?
In approaching these questions, we encounter one another as people of faith belonging to
one of the three monotheistic Abrahamic religions. How do
we understand this encounter? Why do we desire it and what
do we hope to achieve from it? What limits do we place on
our engagement? How do we use our own sacred texts to guide
us in understanding the other and the world around us? What paradigms and models
do we employ to make sense of the existence of the other
faiths within the context of our own believing? As we ask
ourselves these questions, we will also listen to the answers
given by the other participants in the conference.
Applicants cannot be guaranteed a place in the conference.
Places will be allocated with a view to having a balance
of Jews, Christians and Muslims and a balance of women and
men as far as possible. Similarly, places will be allocated
to ensure a balance of laywomen and laymen actively involved
in their congregations, clergy, academics from religious
and secular institutions, persons working in community support
roles, and tertiary students. A proportion of places will
be reserved for interstate participants.
